Small Green Nettle Weevil

The jade green of this tiny (2-3mm) weevil stood out against the aubergine leaf, where I was expecting to find a slug culprit for the leaf damage.

I have previously mis-identified a nettle weevil on this blog, which I’ve now updated following investigation into the species of this latest find (Phyllobius roboretanus). There are many small green weevils and It’s only when you look closely that the differences are noticeable, particularly with the antennae placement; it’s easier when you can compare them side-by-side, but still I’m reliant on experts to confirm my amateur ids on trickier species and it’s not always possible from photos.
Comparison of two small weevils - ignoring colour
This out of focus photo shows the underside is dark rather than having the same green-coloured scales of the top-side.
These tiny weevils will not be of concern on an allotment. Although the adults will eat strawberry leaves they generally prefer the leaves of nettles and shrubs - I’m not sure whether this one had tried the aubergine leaves on this occasion, but I removed it from the polytunnel.
