Platyrhinus Resinosus

Found this little weevil yesterday. Common name is Scarce Fungus Weevil.

Platyrhinus Resinosus
It’s actually not that scarce, but it does eat fungi. Its larvae grow in King Alfred cakes fungi aka Cramp Balls which is why Cramp Ball fungus weevil is another name for this little fella.

Cramp-ball Fungus Weevil

The fungus generally grows on ash trees which we have around the site. Unfortunately these trees are suffering ash die-back as so many ash trees are, so that may be a problem for this weevil in years to come. Although in other countries this weevil has been found in other fungus so hopefully it will adapt here to survive.

Other colourations include more yellow but this one’s face and thorax were white-grey.

This weevil is no pest to an allotment so is welcome to drop by anytime.
