Yellow and Black Hoverfly

This bright, very bright yellow and matt black hoverfly is a Xanthogramma pedissequum. I've seen it called the 'Superb ant-hill hoverfly' but I'm not sure that is actually its common name.Xanthogramma pedissequum

Eggs are laid in ants nests and the larvae feed on aphids which are farmed by the ants - we have a lot of ants and aphids on the allotment site so these predatory babies are welcome to join us and the parents are good pollinators, as are most hoverflies.Xanthogramma pedissequum

It's easily identified because of its colouring, patternation and the dark patches on its wings. Its yellow front legs are also an identifiable feature. I think this one is a male because the eyes are joined together; with all hoverflies, females eyes tend to be further apart.
