Day of the Ants
Today was the 'day of the ants' - that is, the day the virgin queen ants fly out to start new nests (their nuptial flight). Every year you'll notice one particular day that there are a lot of flying ants around - this year it was yesterday.
We've always had a lot of red ants on site. We see more red ones than black ones on our allotment plots.
Sadly this ant met her fate like most of these virgin queens will - being eaten by other ants. Sorry, but here's a video showing the red ants trying to drag the body away. She was already dead by the time I started filming. I wondered what all the red ant action was about!
