Chafer Grub
When Dave found this on his allotment we didn't know what it was! We all gathered round and I remember thinking it looked very prawn-like!
After getting some advice from Shaun at work and the internet - great website - we decided it was a chafer grub; probably a rose chafer as it was found under a compost heap.
After reading up about the chafers I felt totally guilty for it being thrown over the hedge into the canal. They live as grubs for such a long time before developing into an amazing looking beetle - but only if they're given the chance to grow up :-(
Should be treated as a friend on the plot as it helps deal with compost.
