Hover Fly Pupa and Larva

When we found these I thought they were two stages of a lacewing lifecycle. However, on further investigation it would appear that they are hover flies (Syrphid flies).
They were on our cabbages and some hover fly larvae will eat plant material but the majority seem to eat aphids and other small pests. And, as the result is a hoverfly they're welcome on the plot!
