Soldiers on Patrol

It's that time of year again - about 10 days later than last year - soldier beetles are appearing on site. This is a common red soldier beetle (Rhagonycha fulva); One of 40 different varieties of soldier beetle found in the UK.

This one was alone on the fennel. Usually they're seen mating! It shouldn't take him too long to find a buddy as we've seen others on site. They're welcome visitors as they eat beasties like caterpillars and aphids.
