Google Doodle celebrates Maria Sibylla Merian's 366th Birthday

Maria Sibylla was a renowned artist-naturalist in the 17th/18th centuries. She is best known for her work ‘The Metamorphoses of the Insects of Surinam’ which was published  in 1705. The detailed paintings are very beautiful.
Her illustrations of caterpillars' life cycles and feeding patterns, with accompanying text, helped disprove the commonly held belief that insects reproduced by spontaneous generation of decaying matter!
